Sushi Monster – delicious math practice!

Image

Description: *FREE app at time of post *  Sushi Monster is a ridiculously cute and engaging way to practice math fact fluency (addition and multiplication)!  Students must use their critical thinking and reasoning skills to strategically decide which sushi pieces (each has a number above it) to add/multiply together to feed the monster the total he desires.  Within each round, students see all the upcoming totals in the top left-hand corner so they can plan ahead.  Next to this bar is a Number Sentence bar that builds the addition/multiplication sentence as the student chooses sushi.  If it’s wrong, the monster throws a fit and tosses the sushi plates back!  (What a picky monster…)  Levels within this app are sequenced so that they become progressively more difficult as the student completes them.

Compatible with the following device(s): iPad, iPod Touch, and iPhone

Implementation in classroom:

– Activity idea:  This is a great “skills practice” app that could be used in a math center or during Preferred Activity Time (Jones, 2007).  This app can be one of several math apps that students choose from to practice their computational and reasoning skills.  In the center, students at different academic achievement levels can choose the levels that are appropriate for them.  If they want to repeat a level because they are not ready to progress to more difficult content, the app cycles through new numbers so that they aren’t stuck playing the exact same thing over again.

– Time allotment: 15-30 minutes

– Potential standards (CCSS/NGSS) addressed:

CCSS.Math.Content.3.NBT.A.2 Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

– Student groupings and management:  Individually or in pairs.  If iPads are limited, this app can be used in a math center or in a check-out system where kids borrow the iPad like they would borrow a book from the library.  Students must be trusted to work independently/cooperatively with iPads.

– Additional materials needed: Possible paper/pencil or personal whiteboard/marker to show work.

– Accountability/assessment:  Students can be required to record all of their work and thought processes.  If they get answers wrong, they can reflect on their mistakes, why they chose what they chose (practice metacognition), and how they can improve.

– Tips/reminders:  Students and teachers can reset all game play data if necessary.  This erases all the completed levels and brings students back to the beginning.

Wonderful! I could see the gears turning in my niece’s brain when she got to more challenging levels that offered so many sushi options. Hope your daughter likes it! 😀
